Written by Halsey is officially back, and she’s ready to invite fans to visit her Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. The singer-songwriter’s first single off her sophomore album has arrived, and it gets even better, because there’s a music video to match.
The song, titled “Now or Never,” is definitely a slow burn. Halsey’s electro-pop vocals are set against a steady beat, and while it starts off with a catchy melody, the song quickly descends into a realm that feels totally eerie – in a good way, of course. With lyrics like “Never pick up, never call me / You know we are running outta time,” it’s definitely bound to tug at your heartstrings.
While the track is compelling enough on its own, it rises to a whole other level when you watch the music video, which actually marks Halsey’s directorial debut. According to the singer herself, “Now or Never” is a piece of the album’s entire narrative, which tells a bigger story of star-crossed lovers. (So those Romeo + Juliet vibes you’re getting from this video? Totally on the money.) And the video certainly invokes those themes, even containing a dramatic moment where a blue-haired Halsey can be seen screaming “I love him” above the pulsating music.
